One of NUI’s educational partners, K3 School of Arts and Communication at Malmö University (Sweden) demonstrated NUI Suite Snowflake on their own multi-touch table, called Rosie, that 1scale1 developed as part of their thesis work.

1scale1 is a Critical Research Studio looking into the development of interactive media solution within K3.

As education is one of the vertical focuses of NUI, we were of course delighted with the robust and stable performance of Snowflake, despite many children interacting with the system at the same time. Furthermore we are of course glad that our software is so engaging to children to play with.

Thanks to 1scale1 and K3 for the pictures.

Previously NUI, K3 and 1scale1 organized a multi-touch workshop. For more details check the 1scale1 website.

Several months ago I was invited by Interactive Displays Conference to speak at that event on behalf of NUI Group, as one of the founders of that open source non profit community. Unfortunately I at that moment in time I was not sure if I was able to attend so I declined sadly. I forwarded IDC’s request to one of the other forum members with the result that NUI Group will have a stand at the event to exhibit.

However it seems now like I will be able to personally attend as a visitor anyway, to represent the commercial entity of the NUI company.

If you are not able to attend the conference, but would like to schedule a meeting to discuss commercial opportunities with NUI, within the multi-touch industry, please let me know at hv at natural-ui dot com
I’ll be in San Jose from 18-23 of April.

Best,

Harry

NUI and NextWindow combined technology allows for natural and intuitive interaction of digital content, creating an engaging user experience. These combined solutions can be utilized in public spaces, education, military, real estate, museums, exhibition/events, retail stores, interactive advertisement and digital signage and more. Also, this enables the end users to have much thinner multi-touch solution, compared to camera based solutions.

Natural User Interface (NUI) now offers NUI Suite Snowflake for thin LCD, Plasma and TFT solutions.

NUI recently partnered up with NextWindowâ„¢, an international leader in the development of optical multi-touch technology and the manufacturer of optical multi-touch screens, overlays and OEM touch components.

The partnership allowed NUI to develop the NUI Suite Snowflake plug-in for NextWindowâ„¢’s technology, supporting their innovative and cost effective touch solutions ranging from 15 - 120″ diagonal.

NextWindow’s technology can be used as an overlay on top of flat TFT, LCD and Plasma solutions, however the technology is also integrated in mainstream products like the HP TouchSmart IQ500, IQ770, IQ800 series and Dell Studio One 19 PC.

You can find the full press release on the NUI website:

The NUI NextWindowâ„¢ plug-in allows for third party multi-touch software application developers to run their software on the NextWindow platform, supporting any programming language that utilizes TUIO, i.e. C/C++/C#, Java, Flash, Python, Flex, Air, VVVV etcetera. The plug-in comes with pre-installed applications such as PDF viewer, Special effects, Media Viewer, Draw application, 3D model viewer and many more.

Anthony Uhrick, NextWindows VP of Sales mentions: “NextWindow is pleased with the fact that Natural User Interface chose to enable NUI Suite Snowflake to operate on the NextWindow platform. NUI is a pioneering company and brand within the multi-touch technology industry and their efforts to integrate their software solutions on our platform, is a sign that they recognize the importance of our combined solutions. NUI adds value to our platform by delivering a good software solution that allows people to utilize our platform to a further extent.”

1-3 October 2008, IEEE Tabletops and Interactive Surfaces 2008 was held in Amsterdam, where NUI proudly presented an academic white paper that got approved for that event.

The paper that NUI Chairman Dr. Johannes Hirche of LTU (Lulea Technical University) Skelleftea presented was well received by the audience.

It was an important milestone for NUI to present this paper amongst Research Groups like the one from Microsoft.

I have now finally uploaded the white paper and it can be found here:

NUI’s OEM Partner Ideum (USA), again successfully delivered an exciting new project, this time they completed an installation of a multitouch, multiuser table exhibit and two multitouch enabled kiosks for Vulcan Park and Museum in Birmingham, Alabama.

All installations that run on NUI Suite Snowflake at it’s core have customized multi-touch software applications running on them, developed by Ideum in Flash.
Ideum designed a mapping and photo mashup application showing interactive maps, panoramic images, and community-provided photography.

In addition to that they developed a multitouch panoramic viewing application that runs on two HP TouchSmart kiosks.

Ideum designed and developed the stand and exhibit-case for the HP TouchSmart. This platform provides a low-cost touch and multiouch platform for computer exhibits, operating on technology NextWindow one of NUI’s strong partners.
